Health.
Depending on the egg stimulation process used, some donors may experience a slightly distended abdomen during the final days before egg retrieval. The formation of
ovarian cysts can also occasionally occur. This is harmless unless they become too big or numerous. It may then be necessary to have them removed during a short and
relatively painless procedure under ultrasound guidance.
The most significant possible side effect is hyper stimulation. This occurs when the ovaries overreact to the treatment. The abdomen swells and becomes painful for
around five days. Such a reaction occurs in approximately one in fifty stimulated patients.
Fertility.
The eggs are collected using a simple surgical procedure. This is not serious and takes place almost exclusively under local anesthetic. All necessary medical precautions are taken, but as
with any type of surgery, there is a slight risk of infection. There is a 1:1000 chance that the procedure can result in a pelvic infection. Such infections can pose a threat to your own
fertility.
Another risk (also 1:1000) is ovarian bleeding. This rarely has any serious consequences, but can cause some discomfort for a short while.
Pregnancy.
Finally Ñ and this is a curious thing Ñ the biggest risk may well be the chance that you may yourself become pregnant during the treatment. If you had no plans to become pregnant, this is certainly a matter for serious consideration.
You will be asked to abstain from unprotected intercourse during the periods when you are most at risk of becoming pregnant. If you have a coil, it can remain in place and you will not be at
risk. Otherwise you will need to totally abstain from sexual intercourse at the end of the treatment. Also, after egg collection, you will need to ensure that you use a condom for a few days
during intercourse. This avoids the chance of any egg not harvested becoming fertilized. During this period, you will be more fertile and there is an increased possibility of twins.
The CRG takes the utmost care to provide excellent medical support to all egg donors. Due to the shortage of donor eggs, your motivation is rewarded with the highest professional and medical care. We do everything possible to avoid all of the potential risks during your treatment.
