Why is egg (ovum) donation necessary?

Many women are unable to conceive with their own eggs (ova). This may be due to hereditary conditions or because their ovarian function is affected either by disease or premature menopause.
Some of these women however can become pregnant and give birth if they are able to use donor eggs. These are healthy eggs donated by another woman which are then fertilized using sperm from the recipient’s own partner. Any embryos resulting from this treatment can then be placed into the recipient’s uterus to develop into a healthy full term baby.

Unfortunately, there is a persistent shortage of donor eggs, despite the fact that there are plenty of women who could be potential donors.
To help alleviate this shortage, the Centrum voor Reproductieve Geneeskunde (CRG or Center for Reproductive Medicine) at the Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel has begun an awareness campaign concerning egg donation.
